Adopt-a-Tree

Applications are now open for our Adopt-a-Tree program!

Adopt-a-Tree Application

The deadline to apply is Sept. 1, 2026.

How it works

The Adopt-a-Tree program plants new, healthy trees into empty tree wells throughout the Fan, providing shade, environmental benefits and beauty to our neighborhood.

  • Any empty tree well is a candidate for a tree, but final selection depends on assessment of the site.
  • Any resident of the Fan may apply for a tree or multiple trees for only $100 per tree. The remaining costs are subsidized by the program.
  • Anyone who adopts a tree will be responsible for simple maintenance of that tree. Instructions are provided.
  • Planting will begin in late fall or early winter - November through March.

Adopt-a-Tree is a fairly simple program, but it requires YOU!

How to apply

  • Download, print and fill out the Adopt-a-Tree application form.
  • The form has a section to draw a map of the site. This is necessary for the tree teams to assess and prepare the tree wells for planting.
  • Place your completed application with a $100 check into an envelope and deliver it to the Fan District Association office at 208 Strawberry Street.

About Adopt-a-Tree

For more than 15 years the Adopt-a-Tree program has planted more than 1,100 trees in the Fan. Our neighborhood is the only one in the City of Richmond that has consistently planted trees for almost 20 years, and it is because of the support of our Fan community and the City of Richmond. Adopt-a-Tree is a cooperative effort between the Fan District Association and the City of Richmond.
